There are lots of things about twelve. The calendar, the horoscope, the duodecimal system, the Twelve Apostles, the Twelve Gods, the twelve connection, …and the Chinese horoscope.
It isn't only in Japan, but also there are all over the world. Because their origin are religion.
The twelve head for the origin of most import thought of buddhism, it called the twelve connection.
(1)Mumyo…The root of ignorance come from human by nature.
(2)Gyo…The act, labor and their accumulation.
(3)Shiki…The recognition, consciousness.
(4)Myoshiki…The spirit and the material. It's object of recognition.
(5)Rokunyu… The eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, stomach.
(6)Ju…The acceptance.
(8)Ai…The roots of desire, lack for love.
(9)Shu…The persistence after took it.
(10)U…The existence.
(11)Sei…The birth.
(12)Roushi…To grow old and death.
The stra told to add the pain after 1→2→…12, and then to gain the pain. And to lose 1→2→…12,at last to destroy the pain. This theory was interpreted by time, to preach the fate past→present→future.
The twelve gods are from buddhism. They are divine protection for buddhism.
